Art at a Time Like This supports artists and curators in the 21st century, presenting art in direct response to current events.
Founded on March 17th, 2020 by independent curators Barbara Pollack and Anne Verhallen, this non-profit, digital first, arts organization presents art in public spaces --online and offline--as a direct response to social and political events.
Our mission is to show that art can make a difference and that artists and curators can be thought-leaders, envisioning alternative futures for humanity.
Launching May 1, 2026, Art at the Time Like This presents its open call for Take One Action, a public art project and virtual exhibition inviting artists to submit one image and one action that can be taken to bolster our democracy. Responding to current events and news cycles, this project asks how art can move beyond reflection and towards participation. What does it mean to act collectively in a time like this?
Two artists will receive an honorarium of $1000 and be selected to join Marilyn Minter, Robert Longo, Sasha Stiles, Marka27 and Shaun Leonardo in a public art campaign across New York City prior to the mid-term elections. Others will be chosen for a virtual exhibition that serves as an everlasting repository of ideas, images and hope, helping artists and people to combat fear and helplessness. Deadline: August 21, 2026.
This project positions artistic practice as a space to think through political systems and imagine more equitable futures grounded in dignity, agency, and collective care.
The open call is juried by ATLT co-founders Anne Verhallen and Barbara Pollack, alongside its assistant curator Shameekia Shantel Johnson. The artists selected for the public art component will receive a $1,000 honorarium. Please refer to the application form for more information.
